Ian & Claire's Adventure
We caught the bus to Ba (via the post office where we sent Sarah a parcel of shells by sea mail, god knows when it will arrive). We arrived in Ba, phoned Boulou to ask them to meet us in Navala, grabbed some food at the hot bread kitchen and some Pakora (some had raw chillies inside....eeek) and some indian sweets from a stall, then got on the bus. The ride was very long, dusty and bumpy and the radio on the bus was playing a recipe programme in Hindi.
The majority indian filled bus became majority fijiian further up the hills, and we suddenly saw the beautiful sight of Navala. Its a village where all of the houses are traditional Bure, through the chiefs strict town planning rules. We were met by Bulous niece who walked us down to the hostal where we were greeted by Bulou, with hugs and kisses.
The house is lovely, a huge veranda and two lovely bures, being built by Tui her son, a big burly and very friendly guy. Bulous husband Seresio Talili soon wandered out to say hello.
After a huge lunch (saying grace first and with an empty place set for god!) we sat with Bulou on huge cushions out on the veranda as she printed her cloth. That afternoon we slept for hours. At sundown Boulou lit huge lanterns while Tui organised our welcome Kava ceremony. This time he made it the traditional way using coarse Kava sieved through tree bark. We all sat and drank kava which tasted nicer than usual, followed by a huge meal with Boulou and Seresio (poor old Ian having to eat more than he wanted to please Boulou). They just ate soup and yam while we had chicken, fish, veg, and rice and soup. Boulous catchphrase is sleep more, eat more. We then read by candlelight and went off to bed.
