Litchfield National Park 8th May 2011
This park was absolutely fantastic…swimming, great scenery and a campground practically to ourselves (just us and another family). We camped at Buley Rockholes which is a series of crystal clear rock pools that are just great for swimming. We would wander over from the campground early in the morning and again in the afternoon when we would have the pools to ourselves. The boys especially liked the top pool where they could jump off the top of the small waterfall and into the water below although we did have to keep a watch on Archie as he would swim around oblivious to the current pushing him towards the next drop off and into the pool below.
On one afternoon Jo saw a golden tree snake (non venomous although Jo didn’t know that) as it was coming down out of the tree very close to where she was standing. Jo remained very calm for someone who had a definite snake phobia when we left home...she has come a long way.
We had one morning at Florence Falls where Jo and I had visited together some 15 years ago. Due to the extended wet season the falls were awesome (Max and Archie’s new word for anything good) with so much water flowing over them compared to last time we were there. The swimming in the plunge pool was great although the current was quite strong which made swimming out to the falls quite difficult especially with Max or Archie on our backs.
We also visited Wangi and Tolmer falls and did the Greenant trail walk up onto the escarpment to a wonderful rock pool above the waterfall with great views. You could sit in the rock pool and look out over the trees to the horizon. This was also a great place to escape the crowds that seem to invade the park between 10.00am and 3.00pm
We once again enjoyed being able to have a campfire at night and cook dinner in the camp oven…that thing is foolproof…just throw in whatever food you have give a bit of a stir and throw it on the coals, we are yet to have a bad tasting meal out of it and were getting a bit thin on supplies by the end of our time there.
