Edith Falls – Nitmuluk National Park 5th May
A last minute decision led us to Edith Falls (60km NE of Katherine)…Absolutely beautiful…we ended up staying four days…so glad we made the detour.
We picked a nice shady campsite…had some lunch…and before long Max and Archie were all set up doing some painting (part of Max’s school work was to paint a self portraits…it was quite funny…Max even included the scar on his forehead). The portraits were followed up with some Aboriginal dot painting...something the boys love doing at the moment.
Afterwards we took a 1km walk to the Upper Pools (the only place open for swimming at the moment – middle and lower pools had not been surveyed for crocodiles). It was a water wonderland…spectacular…the boys were bubbling with excitement and couldn’t wait to jump in. We had to quickly harness their excitement so as to brief them on the rapids.
Within minutes Max and Roy were floating down the rapids…all smiles. With Max perched safely on some rocks…Roy circled around for Archie’s turn. I watched anxiously hoping Archie wouldn’t be frightened by the sometimes helpless feeling of being swept around by fast running water. He loved it and couldn’t wait for another turn. Next time was with mum! We all had loads of fun.
The following days consisted of pretty much the same routine. A lazy morning (sometimes fitting in a little schoolwork)…lunch… the afternoon at the upper pool…early dinner…finishing the day with the odd game of monopoly (if the boys weren’t too tired).
