16/08/2011 Day 6. Kunta Hora
Set off from Prague about 10 and landed at the motorhome park at about 12 at kunta hora. There were some mad roads and Aaron was driving for the first time. He did well though! We didn't die once. Got the van into a space and then the sun came out and stayed out for the rest of the day. Walked into the town and went to have a look at what was on offer. The first thing we went to was the silver mines. We got dressed up and waltzed down an old mine from 14th century. Tight bits, small bits, wet bits, crazy. We were on the first level, the highest at 35m deep but there were another 12 below us which were filled with water. They could only estimate that there was another 12 below as nobody has been down in 100s of years and divers have only been down 2. They expect it was once 500m at the deepest. We left there and went directly to the st barbara cathedral which was an awesome site, very pretty building. Our eyes were then set on one thing, the church of bones, the Ossuary. We walked about 1.5km to get there but it was worth it. Approximately 40,000 people's worth of bones were used to decorate the inside of the church by a half blind monk years ago. This was because the graveyard was too full. The graveyard became a desired place of burial because the old emporer had a trip to Jerusalem (the holy land) and took some soil. He then sprinkled this over the land around the church which everyone heard about and loved it! I read that in 1318 alone, 30,000 people were buried in the grounds because of a plague wiping them out. One of the coolest things was a stand which housed the skulls of warriors who had died or survived being stabbed in the head with swords, shot with arrows, hit in the face with a mace and hit on the head with an axe. You could tell some survived because of the apparant healing of the skull. One crazy taxi trip back into town off an apologetic man and we headed to a place to eat. I couldn't tell you the name of it because I couldn't even read it but it was brilliant, styled like a medieval tavern. We got a feast of ribs, chicken, pork cheesecakes, cooked bananas, couple of pints each and me and sam had a glass of mead, rocke fuel more like. This totted up to be 1500 koruna. It sounds like a lot but it converts to around £12 each, bargain! A walk home and a chilled evening, early night, setting off at 6 tomorrow to get to Auschwitz around 12 and then the campsite in Krakow in the afternoon. Can't wait!
