Today we visited the Pont du Gard, the 2000 year old aqueduct built by the
Romans. It was an incredible feat of engineering. I remember learning about it in my architectural history class way back. It's roughly equivalent in height and length to the high level bridge, built entirely of stone without any mortar. Seeing it up close was a great experience -- definitely a highlight of the trip so far. Next on the agenda was Arles, where we planned to have lunch, but it turned into a very bad experience. The steak "special" we all ordered (big mistake) was so tough it was virtually inedible. When we complained, they brought us Salisbury steak (hamburger meat) that was red inside, so we refused to eat it. When we wanted to leave, paying for only part of the bill, they threatened to call the police and physically blocked Jim from leaving until we paid the full bill. That's the French for you! That incident left us with a bad impression of Arles, so we just had a quick look around the Roman ruins there and headed back to Avignon, which is a much nicer city. Later in the evening we had a very good, albeit somewhat expensive, dinner there in a restaurant recommended by our B
