We spent the day today in Avignon, which has some incredibly well preserved structures dating from the middle ages. First was the Pont St-Benezet, the bridge of the famous song. It was built in the 12th century, but largely destroyed by floods in later centuries. You can walk on the part that still goes part way across the Rhone river (see pic) which we did. Next was the Palais des Papes (Pope's Palace) where several Popes resided in the 1300s. I didn't know that the papacy moved here from Rome for a time, or that the popes lived just like kings and queens in palaces with incredible riches, so that was quite interesting. Thank goodness for the Reformation! We had one of our best meals of the trip so far at lunch, at a sidewalk cafe/restaurant. Seems like you get better value at lunch. So for supper we just picked up a pizza at a nearby pizzeria, along with some local Vin Blanc. Some red grape clusters freshly picked from the vines growing in our courtyard provided the finishing touch.
