Helen woke up an hour before Jay. We had a shower and made our way to 'Tian Zi Fang' located on Taikang Road, this is an old street dotted with local style Shikumen Houses, which is one symbol of Shanghai folk culture. It is full of artists and local designers that have set up boutiques and cafes. There were many art studios and galleries. On the way there we stopped off for breakfast at a bakery called 'Croissant de France'. Jay had a BBQ pork pastry and a bacon and pesto bun. Helen had a blueberry and raisin sandwich. It was yummy!
It was quite hard to find the area 'Tian Zi Fang', Art Centre. Jay spotted an alley way with a gate so we walked through. We browsed around the cute narrow streets and did some shopping. Jay bought a T shirt.
We had lunch at 'New York Pizza'. Jay had two slices of pizza, spicy chicken and 'Porko'. Helen had a 'Brooklyn' pizza and fruits.
After lunch we did more shopping. Jay bought a piece of art work made by an established Shanghainese artist. Helen bought a unique top from a shop called 'Exotican', the top was designed by a Singaporean designer called 'Utopia'. She also bought a souvenir for her sister Mary (a red silk diary book).
After some good shopping, we went to the nearest metro station to make our way to the Jade Buddha Temple, we went off the wrong station as the name of it was very similar to the one we needed to get off. We got a bit lost then realised we needed to get off at a different station. When we eventually got off the correct station, we walked up the road leading to the Jade Buddha Temple. Unfortunately by the time we got there (5pm), the temple was closing. Helen managed to get a few pictures of the temple though. Outside the temple was surrounded by lots of beggars, this was the first time we saw lots of beggars in one area. One particularly elderly beggar chased after us whilst chuckling away to himself. We found this funny and was tempted to give some money but could not as we did not want to attract other beggars.
After this, we went back to our hostel to drop our shopping off then packed our stuff ready for Beijing tomorrow.
We had a tasty dinner at Pizza Hut on Nanjing Road. Jay had penne pasta bolognese with cheese and bacon. Helen had lasagne. We also had mashed potato with bacon and cheese to share.
After dinner we got the Metro to 'Lujiazui'. This is the financial district where all the skyscrapers are. We got a ticket to go up the 100th floor Observatory Deck of the Shanghai World Financial Centre. This is the second tallest building in the world and has the highest observatory deck in the world. The ticket cost £15 each. When we got up there, the views were amazing, we saw all the surrounding buildings lit up. After this we used the toilets and it was the most high tech toilets we have used with heated seats, automated cleansing facilities with temperature and pressure control.
After this, we got the Metro to East Nanjing to see 'The Bund' at night. The colours from the skyscrapers reflected onto the river which was beautiful.
We got a taxi back to our hostel which cost 127 CNY (£12.55), we then went to the local convenience store to get some snacks and pot noodles for our train journey to Beijing tomorrow.
