Our plane landed 6.30am local time at Shanghai. (China is 8 hours ahead of GMT) The weather was much cooler than Vietnam, it was still relatively warm (22 C) though. After we got our baggage, we went to the ATM machine to get some local currency, Helen managed to withdraw some but Jay had problems with his card. He purchased a phone card to ring his bank but he could not get through. We decided to leave it as Helen had enough money for the time being.
We had breakfast at the airport, we both shared ramen noodles and spring rolls, it was a tasty breakfast.
After breakfast, we went to catch the Maglev train to get us into the town centre, this is a hovering magnetic train, which is the fastest in the world, which has a top speed of 431km per hour (268 miles per hour). Once we arrived at the town centre, we caught the metro to get to our hostel.
We checked in and was shown to our dormitory, which had 4 bunks and 8 beds. It was quite a small room. The hostel seemed disorganised as other people staying in our room had chosen their own beds rather than sticking to their allocated ones.
Once we were settled in our room, we made our way to 'People's Square', one of the main attractions of Shanghai hosting plazas and shops. We then went to the main shopping street called 'Nanjing Road. We browsed around some of the shopping plazas.
We had lunch at McDonalds for convenience, Jay had bacon cheese double burger and Helen had a chicken wings meal.
After lunch, we browsed around some more shops and stopped off at a dessert place, Helen had a Mango Pudding which was creamy and delicious. Jay bought some Suntory beer to try and liked it.
Whilst looking around, we came across 'Dunkin' Donuts', Jay bought a doughnut to snack on.
As we had a long night of travelling from Vietnam and browsing around the shops we felt like zombies by the evening. We headed back to our hostel and went to bed at approximately 8pm.
