We arrived at Franz Josef at about 3pm, so it wasn't too long a journey on the bus, and when we got there it was beautiful sunshine! I had decided to do the full day glacier walk for the next day with Sara, so we paid for this and then went for a wander around the town. It didn't take long, as it's the smallest town ever! It was really pretty though, and looks like a ski town. Me, Sara, Jackie, Katie, Georgina, Imogen and Steve had a drink in one of the bars and then went down to one of the lakes and sunbathed for the rest of the afternoon.
That evening it was bingo in the hostel bar, so we all thought we would go for a laugh. With my luck as always, I didn't win anything and I ended up knocking all of my tiddly winks off of my board. I couldn't remember what numbers I had got, so I just gave up and sat there drinking my wine! Worked out for the best!! The bingo was great fun and then it was an early night, in order to be ready for our big walk the next day.
It was an early start for our walk and when we arrived at the shop we were given our equipment for the day. We had to have the big walking boots and the Crampon things that go on the bottom of your boots (probably didn't spell that right though), in order to walk on the ice. When we were ready we were taken to the glacier on their bus and started our walk. We were split up into four groups, group one being the fast group and group four being the slow, national geographic group! I went in the slow group, as I knew I would probably have trouble climbing up the ice and I wanted to take a lot of photos.
The day was amazing! It was such a great experience walking up a glacier. In total it took us 6 hours, with a half hour break for lunch. Our guide was brilliant and would occassionally have to use his ice axe to create steps in the ice for us! The views were some of the best I've ever seen and I even had my own personal guide infront of me. I was behind a guy called George who was from Japan, and for the whole day, everytime we came to a difficult bit in the ice he would hold out his hand and help me across! What a gentleman! I also had a lovely couple behind me, who live in Australia, so I kept talking about how much I missed Oz and they turned out to be Poms who had lived there for 20 years! So I was then asking them everything about moving to Oz! lol. The woman felt the need to look after me, like a mother would, why do I always get this?! Is it my size?! She was lovely and always made me walk infront of them. How sweet!
There were several times that we had to climb up really steep parts of the glacier and even through very small caves. Some of them were so small, it was near on impossible to get through. We just had to push ourselves through on the ice and would pop out at the end.
We all had such a fun day and it was a fantastic experience!!
