Awoke to some violent banging. Drew the emergency exit curtain to find we were somewhere that looked like a service station. It was light out and we were shortly supposed to be at Sao Jose dos Campos. However after a short speech (in Portuguese) by one of the bus crew, everybody else got off the bus moaning and groaning. We did the same, going in search of breakfast. Found an American to translate, confirming our bus was going no further and another was on it's way.
Eventually this one arrived and an hour or so later we were crawling through what we worked out to be Sao Paulo. A couple hours later we pulled in to Sao Jose dos Campos, just before midday - from what we were told in Foz Do Iguacu we would be on the beach in Paraty by midday!
The next bus to Paraty was full and the one after not for another 5 hours, so we settled for a bus to Umatuba, somewhere we had not heard of but apparently on the way to Paraty. The many beaches of Umatuba looked very appealing and it was good to be back on the coast. The town was less appealing however, especially wandering around in the heat with our bags looking for the buses to Paraty. After asking a fourth person for directions eventually found the station where we had a 2 hour wait for the next bus. Eventually pulled in to Paraty at 6.30, 30 hours after we left our hostel in Iguacu. No more overnight buses for us thanks.
Caipirinhas and Indian food at the hostel, chatting to a Dutch couple, before falling wearily in to our bunk beds - (the hostel had messed up our booking but given the free caipirinhas , our state of tiredness, and the fact we were no longer on a bus, this wasn't of huge concern).
