I had a big sleep in this morning! Sleep has been a nonexistent commodity these last few weeks as I have been coughing myself awake or cannot get comfortable enough to sleep. I take it when I can get it. But I still want to do something with my afternoon so decide to complete the rooms l haven't seen of the MET. It's Mother's Day today and the neighbourhood is full of people in the parks, at the local cafes, even the building is noisier with the constant flow of the lift and visitors. The train station is deserted so I'm hoping the museum may be a bit quieter today.......
The special exhibition "Impressionism and fashion" is about the role fashion played in impressionist art, and the original dresses that were worn in many portraits from this era were sourced and restored, then displayed along side the painting of the dress. People were much smaller back in the day, and the corsetry made the waists appear tiny. The dresses were very elaborate and lovely, even the day dresses, as they were all handmade, and the colours in some cases were surprisingly bright.
There were a couple of other annexes I had not yet visited .... One that was a pleasant surprise was art from Iranian lands, beautiful, detailed geometric design! I revisited the modern masterpieces gallery as it was less crowded as hoped, and I continued into rooms displaying the old European masters (Caravaggio, botticelli ). There were also the restored European rooms with fixtures and furniture that had been missed from the last visit with Jane. An eclectic but interesting range. That is my fourth visit to the MET, well worth becoming a member and I was able to appreciate all their amazing pieces as it was spread out. You can get art overload, even art as good as this.
