It's cold and overcast, with the threat of rain, so we change our plans to a suitable wet weather day activity - the MET. Today we are starting at the American wing - which is a series of reproduced rooms from significant homes around the state - often donated by the families before the buildings themselves were demolished. They include all the furniture, lighting and wall cladding of the period. I particularly like the Frank Lloyd Wright room with all the beautiful furniture and lead light windows.
After lunch (at the members dining room), we went and checked out the masters upstairs - some iconic Van Gogh and Monet, and many other big names, but some of my favourites this time were portraits and some renaissance art whose artist I should have paid more attention to. There were big crowds and you can only spend so much time absorbing art detail, so I will come back another time and give more attention to these paintings later.
Jane and I felt the need to have a bit of retail therapy. We started oddly enough in a chocolate shop - Vosges - that gave very generous samples of chocolate, specialising in liquid salted caramel slabs, and one unusual one containing bacon!!! And it was good!!!!
Across from this on Madison ave is Jonathan Adler, a homewares design store, where Jonathan and selected artists design furniture, ceramics, lights, bed linen, etc, at reasonable prices. You would know his stuff, it features heavily in home decorating magazines, but is not sold in Australia. I will include photos of his shop in the photos on the upper east side. I haven't bought anything yet... But Jane didn't show any restraint.
We caught a cab to Bloomingdales! What a great department store, and deceptively small from the outside! Jane and I both got some great cosmetic deals, and tried on some shoes for fun! We were so distracted we didn't leave until 8 pm - it was a very late return to Scarsdale and another light dinner of salad and cheese and salumi from Eataly.
