It's the weekend, and it's time to go into manhattan, and see what's happening! I'm concentrating on Chelsea today. I started with an antique market that takes over two floors of a decrepit parking lot between w24-25 off 6th ave. The space is divided into different lots manned by the sellers who specialize in different things - old manolo blanik shoes, furs, silverware, printing press pieces, and general flea market junk. Fascinating to forage through but nothing to really tempt me.
There are permanent antique stores in the immediate neighbourhood, one with large scale industrial antiques, and another with Art Deco lights to die for.... Pieces that would look fantastic if you were lucky enough to have a loft apartment.
I continue on to the high line, a reclaimed elevated railway that has been converted into a green space highlighting artwork and innovative gardening. The views are amazing and people use the space to relax, listen to street performers and sun bake as its protected from the wind by the surrounding buildings.
The Chelsea market is just off the high line. Housed in an old biscuit factory, it's full of atmosphere as well as great food. I eat lunch at The Green Table - their lunch plate is a half a cheese and pickled pear toastie, potato and leek soup and green salad - so good. I have had my first celebrity sighting and appropriately it's an actor from Sex and the city - Carrie's boyfriend Berger, the one who dumped her by post it note. There are so many good things in the market - an Aussie pie shop, cheese shop, Italian supermarket and the fat witch brownies! I have some real sour dough bread for breakfast now!
