So Tom managed to get us a really good deal for about £13 a night at a nice hotel with looovely swimming pool and breakfast buffet included, bonus!
Whilst here we hired bikes and cycled to and around the Old Town. We couldn't have picked a hotter day! What a lovely little place though. Hoi An is a historic town with wonderful architecture, full of character, set along the riverside. Hoi An used to be a major port and The Old Town is now a Unesco World Heritage Site where you can see Japanese merchant houses, Chinese temples and ancient tea warehouses that have been preserved. Some have been converted into restaurants, wine bars and tailor shops.
It was very busy when we were here, lots of tourists and lots of touristy shops too. Though mostly busy with pedestrians and push bikes. Nice not to have cars and motorbikes everywhere for a change. The fact it was quieter because of this just added to the ambience I suppose. Everyone quietly exploring the side roads, shops and restaurants with Chinese lanterns dotted about the place :). Was nice.
We visited the Japanese Covered Bridge (built in 1593 and has a roof and temple built into its Northern side), Tan Ky House (a preserved house from the 19th century which once belonged to a Vietnamese merchant), Quan Cong Temple (dedicated to Chinese general Quan Cong), Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation (they used to have meetings here until it was turned into a temple) and finally the Tran Family Chapel (built in 1802 for worshipping family ancestors). We had fun and games in the heat trying to find some of these places but got there in the end. Nothing a nice dip in the pool in the afternoon couldn't fix. It was seriously hot though, really.
A nice day of culture and history very much enjoyed :).
