Before we went to Mumbai we stopped off at the Ajanta caves. These are ancient caves, dug out by hand, and contain many ancient statues and paintings ranging from the 2nd to 6th century! We only gave ourselves one full day here so after arriving in the nearest town of Aurangabad we got the bumpy bus to Ajanta.
The temperature was very similar to Khana so was well above 40 by the time we arrived. It took us a very hot 3 hours to get round all the caves. Some were more impressive than others but they all generally had a mix of wall paintings and large Buddha statues in varying states of decay. I can't say much more than that really as the photos tell the story better but we were both very impressed. The place seemed to be well looked after which is always a bonus in India, they were even very strict on flash photography.
