Meikles Adventure
Glennie's 40th Birthday – Happy B’Day Glennie!!
Up and at it again – heading out of Karajini today, going up towards Broome. Had a bit of a downpour earlier this morning – just after Sach was talking about no more rain – and then we get some more (of course). Nothing too serious though & by the time we got up, although a bit colder, it had stopped and the tent was almost dry on packing it up.
Headed towards Marble Bar on some pretty dubious dirt roads, Marble Bar, the hottest town in Australia where someone discovered a band of marble down near a waterhole, the marble actually being Jasper – but very pretty nonetheless – gorgeous reds, browns, whites, blacks covering these rocks and even more beautiful with the effect of water.
A beer to be had at the Ironclad Pub – the heart and soul of the town apparently – a very tiny mining town with very basic housing, a park, a roadhouse, a very nice looking community house and not much else!
Late afternoon now and we headed off further north on more dirt roads – just trying to get as far as we can to the coast again tonight – to tent it again. Well we didn’t get too far at all – our first puncture – on brand new tyres we had to purchase in Perth – oh dear!! A huge hole ripped in one of them and a very hard time Sach had to change 1it over with the jack – will have to buy another of those as well – it coulda been worse huh!!
Back driving just after 5:30pm – eventually pulled over as the lights going out – next to a railway line and nestled in amongst the mountains – near Shay Station (now abandoned) – about 60km from the Great Northern Highway. Leftover spaghetti & some tired bods put themselves to bed, only to wake up very shortly after to a deflating air matress and a night spent trying to get comfortable on the hard desert rock ground – what a joy! – 2 punctures in 1 day – let’s hope there aren’t too many worse than that 1!
