Meikles Adventure
Had no idea of time today – just got up, packed up the trailer & walked out into Winjana Gorge.
It was already getting hot before we left – another hot one predicted. They say it is getting hot pretty early this year & there has even been some speculation about when the wet season might start (normally about October).
The gorge used to be some old Devonian reef – underwater reef – of course billions of years ago but there is evidence of old animal life in the walls of the rock face as we walked in – what looked like huge old coral reefs flattened and weathered on the surface of the land many years ago. Really quite amazing.
Heading further into the gorge we spotted our first crocodile – and a few more afterwards. All freshwater and supposedly not dangerous but still it says that we need to classify that if any croc is over 1.5m long it is dangerous!
Saw hundreds of bats in the trees on the edge of the Lennard River & crocs also, just floating quite still in the water or lying on the river banks. Couldn't have been hungry because some good eating fish swam right by most of them in the water and they did not move.
Hot, hot day – kids lost their dresses, Tenille fell down a collapsed bank on the side of the path ( stopped paying attention for 5secs unfortunately) – she was ok at least! Jaz had to be carried, Tenille had to be carried – it was a long and hot walk, but absolutely stunning – some more picturesque.
Back to camp about lunch time we think – had lunch as it felt like that time but really it was probably 11am or so. Cool off under the tap for a bit and back in the Beast.
Off towards Bell Gorge today & hoping to camp on the side of Bell Creek – no such luck – next to couple of caravans rather and their couple of generators of course – ruin the serenity I tells ya! Drove up to look at the road to Bell Gorge later, but because the creek is not really running too much in the dry the camps that used to be on the creek where they’ve closed off the camp sites didn’t look too great anyway.
We had showers in the solar showers at Silent Grove Campground & supper and that was us I think.
