Hi!
Again almost a week has past from my last piece of writing and my sense of time is totally gone. :D If I didn't know, I could not say have I been here for two weeks or two months. We experience so much all the time that it is impossible to assimilate it all at once.
Electric Market
Well, during the last week we have been doing again lots of new things. At first, last Friday we went to see the electrical market. We thought that it would be some kind of plaza full of electronics, but in a very Chinese way, the market consisted of many blocks and various streets full of stores and halls. There were separated blocks for cameras, televisions, phones and other stuff. The place was incredible! We actually did very good deals in there. I and two other girls bought electronic dictionaries where we can draw a Chinese character and the machine translates the words in English. It is very handy when you get lost and have no clue about the street signs. Now I'm not scared of getting lost anymore.:) These kinds of markets you can find to all kinds of products in China. And you can get nice discounts by bargaining and especially if there is many of you who will buy the same product.
Shopping
On Saturday we wanted to continue shopping but in other way than buying electrical stuff. We went to the shopping street Shàng Xià Jiu and it turned out to be a perfect choice.Everything was so cheap and still we could bargain almost half of the prices away. Only bad thing was that it is not possible to try clothes on. But anyway, the place was so far the best shopping area we have found and I will definitely go back there. :)
Shamian Island
Sunday was a perfect day off from the city's hectic atmosphere, noise and traffic. Me and two of my friends went to see the city's famous sightseeing Shamian Island, which was acquired as a foreign concession in 1859 after two Opium Wars. British and French people have lived there, so the architecture is very different than anywhere else in Guangzhou; when walking in the boulevards it feels like you'd be in Europe. Shamian Island's traffic is restricted so the area is very peaceful and quiet even though it is right next to the city center. In an island we had an interesting lunch: frogs a very spicy sauce. You can see pictures in the foold album. :) It sounds horrible and disgusting, but it's not really bad at all, when you're not thinking what you're eating. So I can really recommend to take a try!
People's Park and Comic City
After the calm afternoon in Shamian Island, we still felt that we have to take advantage from the great sunny day. We decided to go and see huge activity park near, People's Park. It was just a few metro stops away from the island and our friends had told us all the good about it. The park was absolutely worth of going. People were singing karaoke there, dancing, playing instruments and different games, doing sports and just enjoying the good weather. After wandering awhile in People's Park, it came already a little dark. Right under the park there is an interesting underground place called the Comic City. The Comic City is in three floors and all of them are underground. It is full of small stores and boutiques with clothes, decoration, jewelry, books, film etc. of comic characters and series. There are also restaurants and game rooms. The place was so huge, that we didn't have time to go through it all. But Comic City was also something that you can only experience in China! I definitely want to go back there to see the rest of it.
In the evening we went out to eat with our Italian friends. The temperature is already between 20-30, so the evenings are also very lovely to spend outside eating and drinking in a good company. The weekend was just perfect and very relaxing after first week of studies. Next weekend we're going to see the countryside in Guangdong Province, so I'll write to you soon again! :)
