http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfmesWdEHm0 26 seconds in is us!
We went to the tomato fight with the 4 other people in the apartment we were sharing. 2 guys one from the UK and the other from Australia and 2 girls both from the USA. We left the apartment at 5 am, we had to get the metro to the train station. We probably got there at about 6am and already there was a queue of about 400 people for the trains to Bunol! We 'accidentally' pushed right to the front where by the gates there wasn't really a queue. I wasn't about to miss out on going to la tomantina because of a queue at the station! The train pulled in and there was a rush to get through the ticket machine. Luckily the six of us managed to stay together throughout all of this which was a feat in itself. We even managed to get a good position on the platform which meant we got seats on the train!
The train took around 40 mins but it was reassuring to know we were actually on the train and definitely going to the tomato fight! Once we arrived there was a big stand selling sangria and beer we then headed into the actual town. We didn't really know where we were going we just followed the crowd and could tell we were going to be close to the action because all the buildings were covered in plastic sheeting. It was very very crowded whilst we waited for the start. It starts at 11am with a big ham on top of a greasy pole and the trucks with the tomatoes don't come down until someone has got the ham. We couldn't see the pole but I think we were very close to it. Then all of a sudden there was a big cheer and we knew the trucks were coming.
Finally around 10 massive trucks came down the road which was already full to bursting with people. the street was so small that the trucks barely fit down the street everyone got squished like sardines. I had brought googles luckily as the tomato juice stung the eyes as people on the trucks would throw tomatoes at us. We were so squished in that you couldn't even get your hands to wipe your face. Tomatoes were also climbing up past peoples ears because there were no holes for it to go down to the floor. It was fun though even though it was the most I have ever been squished even after going to so many gigs and festivals they don't come close.
After what felt like forever all the trucks had gone down the street and the recall fight began. This must have lasted about 15 mins! The fighting was crazy!!!! But eventually there was no tomatoes left just juice! It was about ankle high which was crazy and it was pretty smelly. Finally we were told the party was over and we headed back up to the station. On the way I got really hot and Dan gave me his T-shirt to lean my head on but then I forgot it. He is very gutted about this! We then had to try and wash as much tomato off us as possible as there are guards at the station who won't let you on the train if you are too messy. It was so hot now too hot too be out in the sunlight. One of the guys lost their flip flops at La tomantina and had to walk bare foot but I don't know how he managed it. After this we all went back to get a shower and headed out to lunch. Then all went to relax on the beach after such a crazy morning!!
