We finally made it to the end of the world!!! Ushuaia! The hostel was lovely it even had underfloor heating and every night we were sweating! We shared our room with another couple on the tour and we got an ensuite with a bath! I had two!
We took a walk around the first night. We were quite far out of town on a massive hill and every other shop was a camping shop. We went to the supermarket and bought a giant giant steak the size and shape of a bicycle seat. 850grams for $3.50 about £2.10. We had to cook it for 10 mins and it was still rare on the inside! Everyone in the hostel looked at us after we cooked it and a dog would not stop jumping up the entire time. We did share it though so we were complete fatties.
The next day we did the touristy things of ushuaia like taking a picture with the end of the world sign and getting a certificate and passport stamp. We also visited some markets and bought a magnet. We also went down to the port where most ships go to Antarctica. We saw the ship that some of our tour wanted to get on but it was fully booked and they were sad. We also took a picture next to a sign that said the dock prohibits English pirates and another sign that said we stole the Falklands.
They really really want the Falklands. Even their maps say that the Malvinas islands belong to Argentina. And Ushuaia is apparently the capital of the Malvinas islands, even though its no where near them. So there was a lot of propaganda about how much they dislike the English.
We ended up at an Irish pub with everyone that had some local beer that tasted absolutely disgusting!
The next day we had a lie in and headed to a museum that is in an old prison. Each wing of the prison was about a different subject. So we learnt about, maritime, the jail itself, an art gallery, Antarctica, different prisons around the world and probably a lot more that I have since forgotten. The most interesting sections were the descriptions of the native people of ushuaia and the surrounding areas. They didn't wear clothes even though it is freezing all year. And they lived pretty much on canoes and huts knelt down so there knees weren't fully formed and they couldn't stand up straight. They also had arms longer then usual. Charles Darwin described them as the lowest form of humanity he had ever come across. Some got taken to the British museum and Paris zoo. Charles Darwin actually sailed with a few of them coming back home that hadn't died. Alit of the natives died once they were colonised, the info said it was because they were made to wear clothes which meant the rain couldn't clean them and of course all the diseases brought over. By 1925 only 45 natives were left.
Another interesting section was about Antarctica, it described all the very first missions across to Antarctica and also about people as early as 1700 going near Antarctica to hunt sea lions which is crazy!
After the museums we headed back to the museum and chilled in the warmth for the rest of the night. We will definitely be back to go to Antarctica some time!
