Graeme round the world
Day 23 April Sun 16th. Up at 5.30am for the Start of 8 hours of hiking, which after yesterday we were all a bit worried about, but it turned out to be a lot more gentle incline wise, but all of us had pins and needles in our hands feet or faces and felt a bit dizzy and definitely out of breath. We gave fruit to the cute local kids who ran up the mountain to see us and were so pleased when we gave then something. One little girl couldn't keep up with her brothers and sisters so I went down to her house and gave her some bread and her dad came out to say thanks, all the locals were so freindly and we didn't see a single tourist, so we had the whole trek to ourselves. Walked up the 1st pass for the day on Sondor mountain to a high pass at 4440m and saw the beautiful lake Huacahuasi and the snow capped Mt Verónica in the distance. Stopped for lunch and a quick siesta before going up the second pass at Ipasayqocha at 4550m the highest part of the Trek, which is about 100ft short of 15,000ft, so Scott, the mega fit American Cyclist and I decided to climb up further so we could hit the magical 15k ft. I was so delighted to have finished the second pass and see the campsite in the distance I virtually ran up to get to the top, but it certainly helped that I had taken my back pack off and had been drinking gator aid plus glucosa tabs, but I felt literally on top of the World. We also made and offering of coca leaves to the Andean Gods for good weather and a safe journey. It was such an amazing feeling and was so great to have a gentle walk down to our camp site by lake Ipasayqocha surrounded by lama's. It was a very very cold night, so trips to the outside toilet were kept to a minimum, but worth it as the Stars were amazing and saw the Southern Cross and Milky way. The food on the whole trip was amazing and I ate loads and certainly had burnt plenty of calories :o)
