We had a great day today at the rainforest centre in newbury, learning about edible plants in the rainforest.
The children's favourite thing was a curacao bird called Luigi, who was extremely friendly and followed us around. He was nearly as tall as Elisha!
My favourite part was the sloth, who we didn't find until we were just about to leave. I turned to tell Matt we needed to head out to the bus and there she was, right at my eye level in the lower canopy!
Most interesting fact of the day was that the Agouti is the only animal in the entire rainforest who has strong enough teeth to gnaw through the brazil nut pod and allow the tree to seed. They are hunted for meat, but over hunting might lead to the decline of new trees being able to seed, and as they take over 100 years to mature and bear fruit, we would lose out on the brazil nut!
Pretty cool symbiosis.
