Sunday. Teresa had an early class in Hobart. When she got back we all piled into Tony's car with Tony & Teresa's bikes stuck on top & went to Port Arthur about 90km away north of Hobart up the coast. This is where convicts were landed in the early 18 hundreds when Tasmania was known as Van Diemans Land. T&T had been round Port Arthur so often with visitors they left us to it & set off themselves on a 2 hour bike ride. We were more than pleased not to go with them as the area is quite hilly! We spent an idle half hour on a harbour cruise that wandered around the bay, the guide pointing out Point Puer, which was the boys' prison & also The Isle of the Dead where convicts and their keepers were buried. It was a cold day and it all looked very bleak. Back on dry land we wandered round the ruins of the Prison buildings and shuddered at the stories of misery that had ensued there. One piece of light relief was the statement that convicts stopped being sent there when Gold was discovered - it was thought that this might encourage rather than deter crime!
Teresa made yet another wonderful meal when we got back with Tony actually cooking the meat, this time it was corn fed fillet steak from north Tassie, on the barbecue. Note: we must get our barbi nearer the back door and also experiment more with Salad ingredients. Who would think that walnuts and pears would go so well with baby spinach & rocket.
