Hi guys haven't put a blog in here for a while - so I'll see what I can remember of Fraiser...We got to Rainbow Beach after the whitsundays trip and after a 14 hour bus journey that was only made slightly easier by the fact most of us from the boat trip were heading to Fraiser together so sitting next to people you know on the coach is easier than sitting next to smelly strangers!
When we arrived in Rainbow beach we checked into Dingoes backpackers and then went for the 4x4 talk all about the Jeeps n what we needed to do before the next day, and we were put into teams of 12 though we were already 6 so 4 new people in our team made it even more fun!
We set off early on the next day packed up all our Goon (cheap wine box) n beer into ice filled eskys packed the truck got the rundown from the hire company about which gear to drive in, in which conditions n once that was done we were off to catch the ferry over to Fraiser! WOO HOO!
When we got to Fraiser we were told to take the back road as it was high tide so couldn't take the beach road! The back road was sooo bumpy n the car broke down in the first hour of driving. Luckily having Bastian a German mechanic n another Jeep passing by with an English mechanic who used to run a 4x4 garage, fixed the problem n we were off again! When we got off the road and onto the beach road we were all amazed it was so vast n breathtaking! We absolutely loved it n there was a mini convoy of all the Jeeps hired from the Backpackers we were staying in the night before!
When we got to the beach I got to drive for about 3 hours! Loved it, it was awesome, driving along the beach through the "woop di do's"! And then up a steep embankment, then off road in search of Lake Wabbi our first destination!Lake Wabbi was stunning, though a bit of a walk to get to - n the ankle was still giving me Jip (I was later to realise when I got to Brisy that it was actually Broken!) Wabbi was a beautiful lake with steep sand dunes on the side - looked like fun - if only we had some boogy boards! we all chilled out there for an hour then headed back to the Jeep out of the forest n back on to the beach to find a camping spot where we spent the first night!
Of course myself and the two Danish Girls took charge of the cooking - and when it came to eating after everyone helped them selves - there was not much left - so we raided the beer n goon, n took more than our fair share! We wandered over to our neighboring Jeeps - also from our backpackers in Rainbow Beach, and had a little party! This was where Moggs the French Canadian guy got the name 'Goon Man' from - as he seemed to want to keep a hold of the goon bag all night, not letting any of us help ourselves to what was rightly all of our wine, he insisted on pouring all of us some, but being drunk he just soaked us with a stream of wine - he was so ridiculous but it was funny!
The next day we woke up at 5am sunrise - helped by the fact the 2 Iran guys had just finished the army, and were used to getting up early n packing up camp - they were brilliant guys. We headed off for the Champagne pools where we had breakfast before the long walk! We walked for about an hour up the cliff and then down the beach to the champagne pools! we went for a paddle then Tom n Bastian went off exploring then came back ripped to shreds having being knocked by a wave while in the pool and cut themselves on the sharp coral like rock - that was really brittle! Bastian ripped up his hand n Tom everything! so we headed back to the Jeep - luckily one of the Dutch girls was a doctor, so we broke open the first aid kit and sorted those 2 out, then had lunch n headed off for the Mahino ship wreck!
After the wreck we went to Ebi Creek, which is the photo where we walked down the fresh water creek in the forest - so picturesque n beautiful! After this we drove off and set up camp! That night a lot of the Jeeps camped closed to each other, and I think we we're very close to a Dingo set as they were everywhere that night, one appeared as it got dark and was sat right next to our beer esky about 5m behind me, I had a feeling one was there - n sure it was, it made me jump out my skin - n then it ran off!
Everyone from every Jeep was in a party mood so we went to one of the other groups game n joined in this game where you have to bend down to the ground n pick up a cardboard box with your mouth - no hands allowed, each round a piece of card is ripped off till it gets harder and harder, smaller and smaller - though Myself and two German friends of mine, seemed to be champions at the splits and it never really got too hard - so I named them my flexible friends!
The next day we packed up and drove towards Lake McKenzie the lake naturally infused with tea tree, and on the way we stopped in the beautiful forest for a walk. Lake Mckenzie was beautiful and so refreshing to swim in especially after not showering for 3 days. So we all enjoyed that, and we sunbathed on the white sand for about 3 hours, before heading back to catch the Ferry back to Rainbow Beach and returning the Jeep!
We spent the Thursday night in the Rainbow Beach, Dingoes backpackers and had some drinks after a well deserved shower! We left Rainbow beach on the Friday by coach for Brisbane, in search of work!
