Gemma and Darren's world wandering travels
Hello everyone,Today we went to 'uShaka Marine World'. Absolutely amazing place. Its a R700million (South African Rand) complex. That’s about 50million pound sterling and opened in 2004. Its one of the world’s largest aquariums with five theme parks inside. One of them being 'Seaworld' which we went too. But don't confuse this with Florida's 'Seaworld', its not as cheesy! The whole 'Seaworld' section was inside and spread across four ship wrecks. First off we went to the 'Great White Shark' enclosure. It was huge with four great whites. You don’t realise how scary and powerful they look until they look at you straight in the eye. As you can hopefully see by the pictures, the tanks are huge and very well looked after. We saw ALOT of fish before we had lunch. Lunch was in a very posh restaurant with silver service. You would of easily paid 70-80 pounds back home for this but it only came to about 21 pounds. Food is really cheap here :o) Where we sat was right next to the main shark enclosure. Darren had duck and Gemma had lamb from which all four sharks kept watching us eat. Quite a strange feeling but really cool! Don’t think they would of liked the cocktails we had though :o)'uShaka' also had a lovely strip of shops. The only way to describe it is its very similar to 'Disney Worlds' Disney Village in Florida. Very pretty but not cheap!Oh yes, the dolphin show... Very cheesy but impressive to see a 30 year old dolphin perform a few tricks. We both didn't really like the show as we don’t agree with them, but never mind. They seem to get a good message across to kids which is a plus. The hostel we stayed in called 'Ansteys Backpackers' was on a beach called 'Brighton Beach'. Defiantly a small world! Big difference though, this one has sand and plenty of it. It was nice to wake up at around 6am (this is thanks to all the early mornings on safari), climb out of our tent to see dolphins swimming about 300metres from us. Lucky to see a seagull with a gammy leg on Brighton beach in England! The following day, Tuesday, we spent in Durban city centre. Mad, mad place. Its like Oxford Street, London but a lot louder. The markets are cool with everything for sale you could imagine. It was cool to come from Swaziland (3rd world) to Durban (1st world) and see the difference. Everyone in Durban uses the mini bus system. They're white mini buses that have been pimped. Shiny wheels, cool art work on the outside with bass thumping sound systems inside. I mean really heavy bass. Makes England’s boy racers sound systems sound lame in comparison. Quite an experience to say the least. There is one really good thing about these buses, they will stop anywhere for you, nice! On the Wednesday we went to 'Gateway' shopping complex. Suppose to be the largest shopping complex in the southern hemisphere. Its big but we still think 'Blue Water' (our favourite shopping place) in England is as big if not bigger. It was a nice place but we could of easily been anywhere in England as most shops were similar to back home! But I (Darren) was in my element when we found a store that sold a lot of 'North Face' equipment :o)Durban is a lovely city but very busy. Be interesting to see what Cape Town is like in comparison.
We're off to 'Coffee bay next' so speak to you all then.
Lots of love, Gemma and Darren xxx
