The changing scenery on the train from Bled to Salzburg was amazing, it went from beautiful blue skies over green hills to heavy snow through the mountains! It was very miserable weather when we arrived in Salzburg but after dumping our stuff in the hostel in the afternoon we grabbed some food and got our bearings - with another church visited to escape the rain! Our plan to have a cheap home-cooked dinner at the hostel backfired when we found out there was no kitchen! It was more of a hotel for school trips with a few dorm rooms spare. Luckily there was a really nice place just next door, probably good for us to get out for a bit anyway!
We woke up to lovely blue skies and sun so decided to walk up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress/Castle, it was quite hard work and definitely warmed us up! The castle museum had lots to look around and the views from the top were incredible, right over the city with the snowy mountains in the background. After lunch we walked around the more 'medieval' part of Salzburg on the other side of the river, which didn't turn out to be as medieval as we thought. As the sun was still out we sat in the gardens of the Mirabellplatz and watched all the tourists taking photos next to the fountain, which was pretty funny and passed some time. We went to a lovely place for dinner and out for a drink afterwards, but after lots of walking it was bed time (definitely still not used to all the walking!).
Due to another rainy day we just decided to have a late breakfast at the hostel (which was included, always good!) then visit the modern art museum on the other side of the city, stopping at a few shops on the way. By 3 we were pretty hungry and enjoyed a big lunch before heading (slowly-with a coffee stop) back to collect our bags from the hostel.
We then caught a bus to the station, ready to catch the 18:56 train to Munich.
Safe to say, they love Mozart and The Sound of Music!!
