My transfer picked me up at 9.00am and there was only 3 of us on this minibus. After I got onboard we headed straight for the Zoo. It's about an hour away... But this isn't just any zoo, this is the Australian Zoo. Which is owned by Terri Irwin, the famous wife of legend Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter. It's now a massive family and friend run Zoo carrying on the great work of Steve. I think its one of the top tourist destination in Queensland. Our driver actually worked at the Zoo and started his own business running transport. Our guide chatted for a while before putting on a DVD about the Zoo and about Steve Irwin. It was a little sad at times, when you hear his daughter talking about her dad. I gotta be honest the crocodile hunter shows used to annoy me. His voice being so over the top, but he was really like that, and cared about what he did. Anyway the DVD was really interesting.
We arrived at the zoo about 10am, got a map of the park and it was time to explore. We were told about some great things to do, and also things that we could leave out. I started the day by walking to the Koala area. They were so cute, most of them were asleep in the trees. It was the first time I have just seen them on their own area. They were free to come and go if they wanted. A few had babies in there pouches, you could see their ears popping out the top. Then in front of me I could see one walking towards me.. Its the first one i've ever see moving along the ground!
Then I walked around the kangaroos and wallabies, fed them with some of the food that you can buy at the main gate. I don't really know how to write about the zoo without boring people! I'll give you a list of all the animals I saw, then if anything comes to mind, I will say it at the end. There was 1,200 animals at this zoo, and I saw the following - emus, koalas, kangaroos, parrots, birds of prey, wombats, snakes, tortoises, Tazmanian devils, dingos, lizards, otters, kookaburras, elephants, tigers, zebras, giraffes, rhinos, cheeters and of course crocodiles. I'm pretty sure I saw a load more animals, but these where the ones I remember.
I went to a few of the shows they had on, the best was the main event in the crocoseum. This is Steve Irwins massive 5,000 seated stadium where they do a crocodile show. It was cool, and you see the crocodile go for an attack. They also did a bird show as well, we had a number of different birds flying centimetres over our heads. Luckly none shat on me! I saw elephant LIVE! They just talked about their routine and facts about the elephant. The otter feeding was cool as well, one was going crazy for the fish.!
I had some lunch that was super expensive, before going to the afternoon Croc LIVE show. It was very similar to the show that I had seen earlier in the day just located at one of the crocodile pens, it was called Casper! I think my favoute animal today had to be the Tazmanian Devil. The reason for this is because they reminding me of Kobi (our family border collie) they were black and while, and one just ran around and around! The last 30 minutes dragged a little bit until the transport picked me up. I had done everything, so found a bench and sat in the sun. Overall I did enjoy the Zoo, however it did feel like a bit of a memorial for Steve Irwin. Pictures everywhere, all about him. I feel a bit bad for saying that, but it's my own person opinion. I know he was a massive part of the zoo.. Just had a bit of a weird feeling about it. It's great that they are carrying on his work.
We had an hour journey back to the city. A little more traffic on the way back at it was rush hour. I got the driver to drop me as close as possible to the XXXX brewery tour. I was dropped about 5 minutes walk away. Which saved me going back to the hostel. I took a stroll as I didn't need to rush as had an hour before the last tour. Walking passed the massive Brisbane stadium.
When I arrived at the brewery, I need a wee so bad, I just rain straight to the toilet. When walking back out, I noticed the bar now looked different. All the chairs in rows looking towards a stage, then noticed a lot of people were in suits?? Wasn't really sure what was happening, but went to go into the shop and tour office. The door was locked? I went and found a member of staff to book on the 6:30pm tour. "We have a private function on tonight. No tours." he said. I was so pissed off now, I'd come all this way for the second time, and still wasnt able to do the bloody tour. I just said a comment about making sure all your staff know about these things, as the barmaids yesterday told me it would be ok to return. I couldn't even have a beer this time. I just turned around and walked out. I couldn't even be bothered to walk back to the traffic light to the train station so just ran across the 4 lanes. On the unmanned platform you have to get your tickets from a machine I only had a credit card or $50 dollar note, I couldn't use either. Everything was going wrong and driving me nuts. I then had to walk to Mc Donald's, buy a milkshake to get some change. Retuned to the train station to finally get a ticket to go back to the hostel. Thank god nothing else annoyed me I was ready to explode. I got back to the hostel knackered buy now, and laid on my bed, and crashed out.
At midnight people came in to the room being really noisy. I understand staying in a hostel you get that, and it didn't really bother me. But then I couldn't get back to sleep, feeling really restless. I just grabbed my iPad and sat in reception on the sofa using the free wifi until the early hours. When I finally went back to bed I went straight to sleep.
