The past few days have been really good. On thursday we made a trip to Maryborough, the home of Mary Poppins. It was also full of wierdos!!! I had to kiss the bearded Mayor - lovely. It was a really wet day so we just had a quick wander round through the market stalls etc before heading back to Hervey Bay. That afternoon we just chilled reading etc. Friday was the day we set off for Fraser Island. It did noit start well as I put my bikinis on the washing line to dry overnight and they got stolen so I am now without bikinis and they are very expensive to buy here :(. I am more shocked that some minger would wear someone elses bikini bottoms. So that did ruin some aspects of fraser island.
Anyway the trip overall was amazing. We set off early to catch the barge over to the island, where we were picked up by a huge 4x4 coach that costs $250,000 to buy. We definately needed it as being on the largest sand island in the world has its disadvantages with the roads. We took our first walk through the rainforest which was lovely as our guide knew so much about our surroundings, our heads are now crammed with facts and figures. Our first sighting of a dingo was here also. Dingos can be very viscious so you have to pretend they aren't there etc and not startle them. We had a total of 5 dingo sightings which is pretty rare. After a long trek we went to our resort - yes resort - for lunch. It was amazing a huge buffet with so much good food, we definately made the most of it. After lunch we drove down the beach, which they call the highway as it has an 80km speed limit. Along here, we stopped at the Maheno Shipwreck, which if you search online has a very interesting history. We then travelled to natural rock pools that are called the champagne pools for a swim or a toe tip in my case. The end of the afternoon we went to eli creek, a natural springwater creek, caused by rainwater etc travelling though the sand over many years. It was very beautiful but freezing cold. Luckily the weather on our first day was awesome. We shared our room with a lovely dutch couple who we got on very well with. We were in our element as we had proper beds, an ensuite and a kitchenette with tea making bits. Again dinner was amazing so we stocked up on roast lamb, pasta and pudding before hitting the beach bar for a few drinks with our room mates. The guide also spoke to us about aboriginal culture and the dingo eating the baby story.
The next day was an early start at 6.00. We had anoother huge buffet with cooked breakfast and continental. Obviously i had both!! It was a very rainy day so we went to the lakes today. Our first was Lake Wabby. It was in the most amazing surroundings, we walked across huge sand dunes that linked to the sea towards a fresh water lake which was surrounded on the otherside by rainforest, crazy!! We took another long trek to a lookout point which although it was misty due to the rain was good. Everyone went for a swim before heading back. On the way back to the bus we found a bottle with a message in it. Unfortunately we had to smash the bottle to get the message out but it was from a 5year old french girl who lives on a boat. She gave her co-ordinates of where the bottle was dropped. It was dropped last year so a pretty good find. She also gave an email address with which to contact her. So exciting. After another huge luch we went to the main attraction Lake Mackenzie. It is in a crater on top of a sand dune and it is a rainwater lake. The wtaer is so clear and saffire blue. The sand is also 98%silica which makes your skin so soft. I went for a swim here in my bra and pants as it was our last stop. Got a few funny looks but oh well!
We then got dropped at our hostel where we slept like logs. This morning we woke up at 5am (me nearer 5.30) to travel to tin can bay where you can feed dolphins that swim to shore. Unfortunately due to all the rain recently they didnt turn up. We are here in australia when they are having the most rain in 120years (Yey) We were meant to travel froim there towards brisbane but the road is flooded so we are now back in maryborough to do a big loop down to Brisbane. Thats all really. Still loving every minute!!
