After an early morning wake up on the train we jumped in a taxi and headed back to our hotel. When we got back there was a chain on the door and the lights off. Ryan thought we might be locked out but I knocked and woke up reception. They had a mattress and were sleeping on the floor. We then grabbed some towels and sat in the restaurant for a while before having a shower and heading out for breakfast.
While heading out for breakfast we saw a bakery and each got a croissant. So cheap and so good. We then sat at a local place for breakfast where I ordered a fruit smoothie and got fruit salad with condensed milk... After breakfast we headed to the bank for Ryan to exchange money and then onto the jail.
The jail had been used by the French when they occupied Vietnam. Later it was used by Vietnam to jail the American pilots. It was interesting to see and read about the history and the spin they put on it.
After the jail we headed back to the hotel. We got half way back and it started to pour down with rain. We decided to head into the cafe overlooking the lake and grab coffee and cake. It was quite expensive compared to other places but it gave us shelter. Once it had calmed down we headed back to the hotel with lots of people trying to sell us ponchos. We also saw a bunch of tourists in a line of cyclos covered in plastic!
We got back to the hotel and relaxed a little before heading out to get some food. We decided on banh mi a sandwich place which had good reviews, little did we know it was a street food food. Ryan got the lot and I had a vego one and we both enjoyed the free iced tea. Ryan even went back for seconds! We then tried to find somewhere for a massage but prices were expensive so we headed back for an afternoon nap.
After the nap we went out for dinner stopping at a place on the corner and eating on the chairs outside. We drank some beer and ate some food whilst watching the Hanoi traffic go past. After dinner we went back to the hotel for a good nights sleep in a bed before heading on the cruise to ha long bay!
