I've had a quiet couple of days in Quito, after the excitement of the Galapagos. Was a bit of a let down actually, returning to the grey skies of Quito and having to wear a jacket again.
Tuesday morning before I checked out of the hotel, I walked to a lookout over the valley of Gualapo and then decided to walk down to the church and have a look. Good workout for the bum that was for sure, especially when I walked all the way back up again. I didn't go inside the church because they were charging so I just looked through the doors.
Checked out of the Intrepid hotel and got a taxi to a hostel more within my budget ($8 night). Walked to the Basilica del Votro Nacional which was beautiful inside and out. Instead of gargoyles, it has turtles and iguanas protruding from the outside. Sat inside and enjoyed the silence and said a prayer for my sick friend.
Went to the South American Explorers Club in the arvo and found that one of my parcels from mum had arrived which was good news. Had a nice dinner with a girl from England who was also in the restaurant by herself. Always a good way to meet people.
Yesterday I pretty much mooched around. Was going to head to the equator but really didn't feel like doing much, so had a hot chocolate and huge piece of rocky road brownie and then used the internet to download heaps of videos, catch up on emails and the world news.
Was going to meet up with a friend this morning but it didn't happen as she was sick so had a quiet morning before getting a taxi to the bus station. I can always be guaranteed to be asked if I am single....
I caught the bus to Otavalo which is where I am now. It is world famous for it's markets so can't wait to check them out on Saturday. Tomorrow I am doing a tour of local towns and artisians homes where the crafts are made.
