We have finally arrived in Belem after two horrendously long days on the truck. 'The truck', you say, 'I thought you were heading out on a public bus'. Well, so did I. When I left the internet to head back to the hotel it was to get my stuff off the truck, work out what I needed and repack. The manager at the hotel then told us that Ross wouldn't be back by midday and it looked like we may be staying another night. Told to come back around 2pm and hopefully Ross would be back. So a group of us headed down to the beach for more seafood. Some of the guys had seen what we had the day before and wanted a piece of action. Just as good, but this time not as much lobster. Went for one last swim in the ocean but a little rough.
Back to the hotel to find out, yes, we were staying another night and something was trying to be organised for the next day. So what is one to do but go for a swim in the pool, lie in the hammock and read. Ross finally got back at 6pm and said there were 2 options for the next day and he would know which way we were going in about 1hr. It was either leave at 1pm on a bus for 24hrs or leave around 7am on the truck for 2 long days with a new driver. Went out for dinner to an Argentina steak house and had the best steak for a while and while sitting there, we saw Magaly (our truck) going for a test drive with a new driver and Ross in the passenger seat. It looked like we would be on the truck after all. Sure enough, there was a note saying to be ready to go for 7am.
Our new driver is a local truck driver that the owner of the hotel knew. These guys were so helpful and it would have to be one of the best places we have stayed at the whole trip. So we left just after 7am and drove all day, stopping for the toilet and a lunch break. Kept driving to we hit a major town about 10pm but then Ross had to find a hotel for us to sleep in. Nothing had been booked as he had not been sure how far we could get. Well we drove from hotel to hotel to hotel to hotel. Eventually Ross got on the truck and said not one had space for us all so we would have to split up into different hotels. I finally got into my room about 10,45pm, had a quick shower and to bed. Couldn't be bothered with food.
Next day we left at 7am again and same routine, but at least knowing this time we had a hotel booked for us in Belem. Didn't arrive to about 9,45pm and again shower and bed. This morning a group of us went to Goeldi Museum and Zoo. We never did find the museum but the zoo was OK. Walked along the port front and markets and bought some rope for my hammock to be hung up with and then we had some lunch and of course, ice cream.
This afternoon a few of us went to the shopping centre and went to the movies. Watched The Code. Don't waste your money on it. Not very good but it was entertainment for the afternoon. Tomorrow we are heading down to the ferry at 2pm to get onboard and fight for the all important hammock space. Have to buy some water and snacks in the morning and have a decent lunch. From what I have heard about the food on the ferry, it could be a week of dieting.....
