Test Run
Joined in a morning walk around Chipping Campden with a volunteer warden who told us some of the local history & explained a few of the building styles. This was a wealthy town based on the wool trade (much like Australia in the glory days). The houses here are all 2 perches wide - who remembers that measurement?? From the old rod, pole or perch lengths - 1 perch is 5 & a half yards so the houses are 11 yards wide. I am actually so old that I remember learning that a cricket pitch is 22 yards long & that's 4 perch or 1 chain! The sun came out after a cold start so we decided to visit Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe & spent a few hours enjoying this lovely place. It's a combination of beautiful gardens, crumbling ruins & a lived in castle which was the home of Katherine Parr, the last wife of King Henry VIII. Inside is a collection of handiwork called "Threads of Time" with some magnificently maintained & restored embroidery, lacework & clothing. It just blows me away to see work that was done over 800 years ago & I always wonder about the life of the person who wielded that needle - would that have been me???
