So the day started as any other day when we need to check out with me wrestling my suitcase shut and despite me not putting anything extra in my case it seems to be getting more and more difficult. From here we went to Safeway to buy some supplies and saw lots of bunnies along the way. Something I forgot to mention was that there are so many wild rabbits around Valdez.
So from here we started our journey to McCarthy. First we travelled past the old
Valdez town site which was destroyed in an earthquake so they decided to rebuild the town a few miles down the road on more stable ground.
From here we drove to the Keystone Canyon and the bridal veil falls which were pretty impressive. We then continued our journey along the Thompson pass one of the snowiest places in North America, so snowy in fact that they have to have markers on the side of the road to show the plough where to go!
Our next stop was the Worthington Glacier where we took the unmaintained path to see the waterfall and the Glacier edge. It was pretty impressive and worth the little hike along narrow paths and over streams to get there. You really felt the difference in the temperature and there was quite a spray from the waterfall. We also saw some of the rocks rolling down the Glacier and falling which was quite cool.
From here we continued our journey and saw our first sights of the Wrangell mountain range which are actually active volcanoes, so we stopped at the viewpoint to take some photos and take in the amazingly long road in front of us.
Our next stop was Liberty creek and liberty falls and our lunch break, where we made our lunch and ate it by the river. After lunch we had a quick chat about what to expect in McCarthy and then we jumped back in the van and made our way towards the 60 mile dirt track that would lead us straight to McCarthy.
On the way we stopped and walked over the Kushkulana Bridge which actually goes over the Canyon and then we took the bumpy road to McCarthy. Despite it being so bumpy I did manage to have a little nap on the way.
When we arrived in McCarthy we had to collect our bags and walk along the bridge as you cannot drive into the town. So we crossed the bridge with our bags and left Miles with the luggage to take in the shuttle bus and we took the walk into town.
The walk was relatively short and picturesque and when we arrived in the town, it looked like it could be from a western. So we settled into our hotel (more like a hostel) and went on a town tour which consisted of us standing in the street and being shown about 4 different buildings - it's really that small.
We then had a little explore before dinner. We had dinner at the Golden Saloon where it was 2 for 1 burgers and then we walked up to see the local softball match but didn't stay long as it started to rain so we made our way back to the room and then had a slightly earlier night.
