Today we got up and packed, said goodbye to our cabins and made our way to Seward with the other 28000 people! We stopped on the way to see the volcanoes we couldn't see on our way into Homer and we were lucky enough to have a fly by by 2 eagles and then saw a further 2 one of which flew along the seafront.
From here we made our way towards the Kenai Fjords National Park. On the way a moose was spotted but I may have been having a little nap at the back of the bus so managed to miss this - gutted!
As we arrived in Seward we picked up our lunch and drove down to Downtown to see what was happening for the 4th July. There were a lot of cars and the road was closed so we made our way to the Exit Glacier. On the way we saw the people making their way down the mountain. This is part of the annual celebration people race up and down one of the mountains in the area. Last years quickest time was 45mins!
When we got to the Exit Glacier we had our lunch and then made our way up to the Marmot Meadow, a thousand foot climb in just over a mile. This was after we read the handy advice that if you get eaten by a bear you should fight back! It was hard work getting up to Marmot Meadow. The climb was steep and involved us having to climb up and over boulders in order to get there. We also had to cross some small streams. On the way up we had a couple of water stops and also saw a shrew and a woodpecker but no bears.
When we made it to Marmot Meadow there were no marmots but there was an amazing view of the Exit Glacier so we sat and admired this for a while. Some of the group decided to continue further but I decided that I was happy with climb I had done (and wasn't sure I wanted to repeat it again but even steeper) so I went with the group back down the trail. Usually on the way down it is a lot easier and don't get me wrong it was so much easier going down but it was still relatively hard as you had to climb back down over the boulders and at one point I totally stacked it. I suppose you could say I curtsied over the rock and styled it out!
When we reached the car park we had a quick look around the visitors centre before we jumped in the van and went back to Seward and checked into our hotel where I had a well needed shower and then got ready for the evening of 4th July celebrations in Seward.
So we made our way down to the Harbour and considering it was the 4th July everything was quite quiet and we figured that most of the celebrations happened last night and today. However on a more exciting note as we were eating our dinner we saw 2 sea otters swimming around in the harbour. Then a little later we saw another sea otter munching on a halibut and then it dropped the fish and reappeared ready to entertain us all before diving back down into the water.
