From where I left off we left Rockhampton and stayed a couple of nights in a place called Mackay. There was not much to do there and not many people either. Me and Lauren found ourselves the only two people on a really long stretch of beach, bizarre! That night we befriended a local guy who 3 hours later was still depressing us with the details of his life! He was seriously the most depressing person ever. We made a quick exit as soon as the opportunity arised.
We were only too glad to escape to Airlie Beach the following day. Driving into Airlie Beach and seeing lots of other travellers was a welcome relief. It had felt like ages since we last saw other people. We managed to find a campsite right in the centre of Airlie Beach. It was funny to see all the other campervans like ours there. We went to have a look round to see what Airlie had to offer. We were surprised to bump into our Welsh friends, who we had first met in Vietnam, then met again on the Thai islands! It was good to catch up with them again and see some familiar faces.
The next few days consisted of sunbathing by the lagoon, nights out at the local bars and clubs and planning our sailing trip. We finally booked our Whitsundays sailing trip with the Welsh guys for the following 3 days and 2 nights.
The sailing trip was so much fun! We were on the boat with 24 people in total and we were lucky they were a really good bunch of people. What a laugh! We spent our time sailing, which we got to help with, me and Lauren got to hoist up the back sail! It really worked our muscles! We also did a spot of snorkelling, with our sexy stinger suits on of course. We also managed in a spot of drinking. The second night of the trip we got let off on an island to use the resort facilities. A party was put on for us along with another 2 boats. Everyone from our boat went mental and had a great time. The drinking games had to be cancelled because they thought we were too mental already! Our boat was definitely the best crowd, funny considering the other two boats were the notorious booze cruises. Back on our boat the party continued well into the small hours of the morning.
As you can imagine we had a boat full of hungover people the next day who were only too happy to do nothing but lie out on deck.
The boat trip has been my highlight of Australia so far. I really enjoyed the sailing, met some really nice people and enjoyed being cooked for again. We were lucky to have good weather and the Whitsunday Islands were so beautiful.
Back on dry land I felt awful! I couldn't stop swaying and was in desperate need of sleep. We spent a couple more nights in Airlie Beach. On our last night me and Lauren were able to use some vouchers we got for free drinks from buying our sailing trip. We had 7 for 2 different bars, enough for the 7 booked on the trip! We got 7 drinks free both times between the 2 of us! Haha!
From Airlie Beach we drove up to Townsville. It was a pretty town but for a Saturday afternoon was surprisingly quiet. We got a ferry accross to Magnetic Island the next day wherethere are some pretty little bays. We then drove up to Mission Beach where we spent the night in a layby by the highway where a sign warned us off roaming crocodiles. Scary! We made it through the night and drove on up to Cairns.
