Ok.... I have finally got round to updating this! Sorry it has been a while but I've just been having way too much fun! Haha.
So we did actually move on from KL to Langkawi and after a super 10days there we eventually managed to leave. It was not easy. Langkawi is the most beautiful and chilled out island. So much so we couldn't leave! We spent both Christmas and New Year there then eventually decided we really must move on.
We flew in with Fire Fly, on a tiny tiny aeroplane. It was the kind with propelors and it was really scary. Thankfully it managed to stay up in the air and we arrived safely in Langkawi. It was beautiful arriving in over the blue waters and beaches and over the mountains and trees. At the airport we met up with our friend from the previous hostel in KL, Bronty, and got a taxi to Gecko Guesthouse. Our guesthouse was in the perfect location, a hop, skip and a jump to the beach and was close to many nice restaurants. Some other friends from the hostel in KL, Adam and Hugo, were also there. It was nice that there were already people we knew there.
We spent the next 10 days chilling out and enjoying the sunshine. The beach was really nice so obviously spent a fair bit of time there. We even tried a bit of sailing. It was actually a pretty scary experience. Sailing is not quite as easy as it looks! Our boat was tiny and kept near capsizing. I tried stearing and managed to figure it out. But then disaster struck when we suddenly caught some wind, picked up some speed.....then both fell out with the boat capsizing! Oh dear. Luckilly I managed to get back in. It was funny though and I'm glad I picked up a new skill. Another day me, Lauren, Adam and Hugo hired a car for the day. As Adam as our designated driver we headed off to explore the island. We went up to see a nice waterfall, went to a really beautiful secluded beach where the posh hotels are and then finally up on a really high cable car which took us ap a mountain. The views from the top were incredible right across the island. It was so green with all the jungle and sea out to the sides. Beautiful. We stayed for the sunset. It was actually a disapointing one to begin with but once the sun disapeared the sky lit up all red. Really nice.
Another day we went on an island hopping boat trip. The boat was fun as it went really fast! The first island was a bit disapointing as it was FULL of tourists. You couldn't even swim in the sea beacuase it was so shallow. We then got taken to see eagles feeding. That was pretty cool as they were all swooping down to get the fish. We then moved on to the Island of the Pregnant Maiden. A mountain on the island was actually shaped like a pregnant woman, amazing. Now on this island there is a lake which it is said if a woman swims in it they become pregnant. Legend has it that a woman's child once died and she buried it beneath the lake. Unfortunately, I was thrown in! Thanks Jeff. Anyway, despite the disapointment at the first island it was a fun morning and we got to see a bit more of Langkawi.
Christmas day was weird. Good fun but obviously strange to be away from home. On Christmas Eve our guesthouse organised a BBQ. We pigged out on lots of nice bbq'd food then made our way down to the beach for a few drinks. It was a great night with lots of fun on the beach then we headed on to the legendary Reggae Bar. In fact we spent quite a few nights in the Reggae Bar, mainly because it was the only bar on the island! It has a really good reggae band that play every night. I've never really been a fan of reggae but certainly have all the songs drummed in to me now!
On new year we had a nice chicken satay dinner. Had to be done. We then went down to the beach for the beach party. It was really good. There was a big bonfire, lots of music and dancing and then fireworks when the bells went. They even played a reggae style Auld Lang Syne! There were lots of celebrations at midnight for the new year then we headed of to the Reggae Bar. Next morning everyone was feeling a little worse for wear.
After a chilled out and relaxed 10 days in Langkawi we forced ourselves to leave and say goodbye to Gecko Guesthouse. I love the chilled out atmosphere in Langkawi and all the local people who are sooo friendly! Its lovely. Everyone is so helpful and welcoming. It is also nice to go somewhere where local people also go on holiday. There is such a mixture of people there all for a good holiday. One thing is for sure, it is definitely a Christmas and New Year I wont be forgetting!
