Geoff, Jade & Goody's Eurotrip
Hey subscribers,
Well we have come to the end of our stay in Belgium and have sampled some of what this country is renowned for, mouth watering chocolate, hot waffles and ice-cream and of course beer, beer and more beer!
We got to Brussels at about 7pm on Monday (27th) with no Maps and the tourist information centre closed, it made our 1km trip to our hostel take about 20-30 minutes. Not the best with our wardrobes on our back and would strongly recommend having maps prior to arrival, but hey, it's all part of the experience.
On Tuesday we had a walk about tour of the city with our tour guide Fredrick (a local old man that looked like Sean Connery) which was very insightful into the history of Belgium. What we thought was an hour tour lasted a little over 3 hours but well worth it visiting landmark buildings and churches that were just amazing.
We had heard that there was a great strip of bars close to where we were staying so we thought we would quiz old Fredrick to see just how much he knows about the area. While his English was quite good, we don't think he understood what we meant, as the strip of bars, turned out to be stripper bars! We worked this out soon enough and found the drinking spot we were looking for where we spent Tuesday night.
On Wednesday night we ventured to a bar made famous for having over 2,000 beers. While we didn't quiet manage to sample them all we had a fair crack and would have tried nearly a dozen. Fair to say that we stumbled out of the place, as not only did we have a few, but all of the beers ranged from about 7-12% alcohol.
Our 3 nights in Brussels was great and well worth the visit. The architecture of the buildings, the history of the city and the Stella on tap made for a great couple of days. If there was one thing I could recommend to the City of Brussels (besides having better tourist maps) is to invest in a few street sweepers. The city was great but slightly ruined by the rubbish and mess all over the streets.
On Thursday we headed to Brugge for 2 nights which wasn't planned (as we were going to stay in Brussels for 4 nights then make our way up to Holland).
We spent our time in Brugge walking around the streets in ore, taking it all in. We also took a boat ride around the cannels listening about the History of the city.
We were all glad we changed our plans it was just beautiful. With over 15km of cannels, including one which surrounds it, small pebble streets and amazing buildings, Brugge is almost in a world of its own and we would strongly recommend to anyone that gets to Belgium to make sure they get to here. While Brussels was nice, I think Brugge takes the cake.
Tomorrow (Saturday) we head to Holland to stay with our mum's aunty and uncle (Aunty Ineke and Oma Cas). Jade and I are looking forward to it getting a chance to meet all our relatives.
Until next time.
Geoff
P.S. Did I mention how good the beer and chocolate are in Belgium!!!
