Well, we finished Santorini on a high as the sun finally came out for the day and we did a great boat trip across to the volcanic island which was amazing for a walk - some of it is still smoking which came as quite a surprise to us. The boat then took us to some thermal hot springs on the other side of the island and, with the encouragement of the Aussie family on board, we got our swimwear on and jumped in ! As it's December, they weren't as hot as usual, so the first foot of water was like being in the bath and the lower sea was cold as you would expect for the time of year ! Still, it was our first dip in the Med and we enjoyed it ! We didn't get to 'island hop' as the boat connections are greatly reduced in the winter (as we had expected) and many islands have shut up shop.
So, we took the 10 hour overnight boat back to Athens, arriving at 5.30am and then took the metro to where we had booked our accomodation - the place was buzzing with young 'uns enjoying their late, late night out as we wandered around with backpacks trying to locate our hotel - after much stress and grumbling we realised we were at the completely wrong metro station ! 2 very tired travellers finally arrived at the hotel at 8am and then had to wait a couple of hours before our room was ready !
Had a lovely dinner out last night (lamb at last, yummy) and several carafes of wine before a slightly wombling wander back to the hotel ! Today we have been to the National Archeological Museum, lots and lots of marble sculptures and some really interesting ship wrecked artefacts including the worlds first astronomical clock. We then we to the Panathenaic Stadium, the birthplace of the Olympic Games which was amazing - there was such a sense of history there and a great exhibition with loads of the different Olympic torches and memorabilia.
We have a few more days to kill around Greece, think we are going to head up to Halkidiki, before we start our next house sit in Bulgaria on Friday, where we will be until the New Year.
Much love x x x
