Well Liechtenstein is very tiny! And has less than 40,000 residents. We arrived on the 15th which is their National holiday and a big event here, the Prince opens up the castle gardens and all the residents are invited in for a beer, then there is a torchlight procession down from the castle to the square and several stages with live music followed by a fireworks display. Our campsite (the only one in the country!) Was about 20 minutes from Vaduz the capital, so we planned to go in and enjoy the party atmosphere for the evening. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm came in earlier than expected - in fact, it started just as I had done a huge load of washing so, firstly we had to hang all the wet washing in the tent and car (the tumble dryer was useless) and then it was far, far too wet to be able to go out and enjoy everything. Which was really disappointing, but not worth getting soaked for and then coming back to a damp tent.
Thankfully Friday was full sunshine so all the washing is now dried, and we took the bus into Vaduz for a look around. As expected, it was a very small capital and not really anything of merit to do. We walked up to the castle - which sits on the top of the city - and had a look at the view, and also went to the church but then came back to chill at the campsite.
One funny moment, when we were shown to our camping pitch - it's 'terraced' so that means there are tents behind us at a higher level and rented huts below us - everyone gets a lovely view of the mountains however the grass access to each terrace was absolutely drenched by the rain and we couldn't get the car out! Having scored up the grass with a couple of attempts we had to abandon the car on the hill and go out for the day! I've uploaded a picture to show you how we wrecked the grass getting the car out!
So on Saturday we moved out from Lichtenstein and covered 4 countries in one day having to go back into Switzerland, through Austria and into Germany. We had 2 nights at Fussen, which is in the south of the country in the Bavaria region and near to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle (the one that looks like a fairytale castle) - it looks incredible up on the hillside but we decided not to visit as it's being renovated inside and out and has scaffolding all over the back and some inside rooms aren't accessible. Instead we took a very scenic drive to Linderhoff Palace, we drove past a lake with all the mountains behind and because it was very hot and a Sunday everyone was out having a great time, canoeing and paddle boarding on the lake and sunbathing by the side. Linderhoff Palace was just brilliant, it was built by King Ludwig 2nd, known as the Mad King, and he was definitely mad about interior design! Although the Palace is really small, he was inspired by Versailles and it's dripping in gold leaf inside and totally over the top - gaudy but also fascinating. The throne room had a huge canopy over it, as did his enormous bed and there were 2 huge chandeliers. One room has loads of glided mirrors so everything is reflected over and over, it blows your mind! The gardens were also very pretty although they are currently being renovate in places, hopefully I have been able to cut the crane and barriers out of my pictures.
On the way back we hiked up to see a waterfall and loads of people were swimming in the water and jumping off the cliff sides, we had a quick paddle!
It was roasting hot when we got back to the tent, everything had melted in the cool box so we had to pour the butter onto the rolls!! We were at Camping Brunnen which was right beside a lake so we took the plunge and went for a swim, it was so nice the water was warm on the top but as soon as we got deeper it was freezing. I'm not a good swimmer but I managed to swim around the lake and was pleased with that.
Today, Monday, we have driven up to Munich and are booked in a hotel for 2 nights. It's a great hotel, very modern and we have a 'suite' - which means we have a lounge, kitchenette and a balcony so we are delighted and as I type this, we are chilling on the sofa watching tv - it feels like luxury!
We stopped en route at the Munich Olympic Park, it was a lovely setting with lakes and a hill but unfortunately it was a bit of a sight as they were packing down a festival so it looked a mess and the actual stadium tour wasn't on as they were preparing for a concert. Never mind, we went up the Olympic Tower and had a look over the city and we will head in there tomorrow.
