Day 18 Wednesday 9th July
Palm Cove - Cairns -Palm Cove (46km return)
It was a warm night with no morning dew. Our camp site proved to be a great spot for early morning sun, and so we have re-booked for the end of next week when we return here to have the car serviced in Cairns .....next Thursday was the earliest we could get a booking.
I did some laundry and then after breakfast we had a morning walk followed by a coffee shop coffee!
Then we phoned our insurance company about the windscreen. This turned out to be quite a funny conversation because after Dave explained that the rock hit the windscreen out in the 'bush' on the Burke Development Road, the person on the phone (obviously reading from a 'script', asked for the name of the suburb and the cross street! We got that sorted and then explained that we were now in Cairns in far north QLD. When the windscreen company phoned to make a time to do the work, they asked, would you like to bring the vehicle in to us, or have driveway service at your home in New Lambton???!!!!!
We eventually got an appointment for 1pm today.....in Cairns!!!
So,we drove into Cairns...well the outskirts really...dropped off the vehicle and took a taxi the rest of the way into town. We enjoyed a lovely seafood lunch overlooking the marina and then it was time to retrace our steps and pick up the vehicle with its shiny new windscreen and new wiper blades! We picked up some supplies on the way back to camp.
We had another walk just as the sun was setting and I am now typing this listening to (not very good) electronic music ..........the 'State of Origin' party is in full swing in the BBQ area in the middle of the campground. For those of you reading this who don't know what State of Origin is.....it's an annual Rugby League, best of three games, competition between QLD (the Maroons) and NSW ( the Blues). This is the third game in the series, with NSW already having won the first two, and so this game is for QLD to save face, or for NSW to make it a clean sweep. NSW are pretty keen to take this third game since this is the first time they have won the comp in eight years! Needless to say, we are not rugby league fans and so will just listen to cheers or otherwise to gauge how the game is going. There is a big screen TV set up and all the banners and flags are of course maroon....since we are in the state of QLD! However there are many campers here from NSW....
I think we are in for a long evening!!! A remote campsite in the bush looks good round about now!!!
