Day 2 Monday 23rd June
Bourke to Currawinya NP (255km).
The night was quiet and not too cold at all. Woke to a lovely sunrise, but it became cloudy after that, and even threatened rain.....but it didn't!!
We broke camp at 8.45am. After about 10km of sealed road we hit gravel, so adjusted tyre pressures. We stopped along the way to collect wood. It was quite cool and windy. Our coffee stop was at Ford's Bridge, on the banks of the muddy Warrego River at around 10.15.
We saw the usual collection of grazing sheep and cattle, plus feral goats, feral sheep and plenty of kangaroo and emu. Flying birds too, of course.
The road was in reasonable condition most of the way and we saw very few vehicles.
We crossed from NSW into QLD at Hungerford and had to open a gate to get through the 'wild dog fence'. We had lunch just outside this very small town.
We reached the Currawinya NP at about 2pm. It wasn't very- well signposted so we called in at the ranger station and he gave us some advice as to where to camp. We ended up at the Plough Shed camp on the banks of the Paroo River. There were some other campers, but not too close. It was a pleasant spot. We saw a large white-necked Heron at the water's edge up the river a little way....had to use the binoculars...and on the opposite bank at around dusk a mother sheep and her two frisky lambs came to get a drink.
We cooked a fabulous roast dinner tonight in our camp oven in the coals....you can't do that in a caravan park! It was delicious.
