Day 30 Monday 21st July
Undara to Cobbold Gorge (240km)
There was surprisingly little dew this morning, but it was cold prior to sunrise. We had time for pancakes, and we were still on the road prior to 8am!!
On leaving the access road from Undara, we turned left (west), .....we had not driven this way before. This road is part of the Savannah Way....the road from Cairns to Broome!.... and we passed through the small town of Mt Surprise on the way to Georgetown, where we got fuel. On the way we had a short coffee stop and a walk along an old low level bridge, which had been replaced by a new high level bridge. We followed a road train for part of the way, but that is to be expected on these outback roads.
From Georgetown we followed the signs to Cobbold Gorge and for half the 90km distance we travelled on a pretty rough dirt road. We made a short stop for firewood, near some 'amusing' rock formations, and then we arrived at the campground just after mid-day.
The campground is lovely and we have a great spot in the unpowered area. So we set up and then had lunch. The amenities here are fantastic, from individual shower and toilet units, to the bar, dining area and infinity pool!!! All in a remote bush setting.
When we checked in we were given some information on bush walks and also a 4WD track in the area. Around 3pm we set off on the walk up to Russell L/O. This walk meandered pleasantly along, through the savannah woodland, where we saw plenty of kangaroos and wallabies, for about 2km. The last 500m or so was VERY steep, but there were great views from the L/O.
After our walk we treated ourselves to a cold beer at the bar and chatted to some other campers. Back at our site we lit a fire and used it to cook our dinner....burgers tonight.
The stars were once again beautiful and after dinner and washing up, we invited the young couple camped near us, to share our campfire, since they did not have any wood. We chatted for about an hour until the fire died down, and then everyone was off to bed!!
