Emma's actual account of the day:
We caught an early flight from Santa Cruz to Sucre on a tiny plane, and the views coming into land were absolutely incredible. The terrain is so so mountainous and we landed in between two mountains on a very narrow and short runway that is apparently used as the final test for pilots-to-be! It was exciting. Sucre, the capital of Bolivia, was much much colder than I everywhere else so far, crisp and fresh and really nice in the sun.
We arrived at our hostel, The Beehive, put our stuff down and went out to explore. The weather was actually lovely with clear blue skies and warm sunshine which was great for us considering Sunday is a holiday in Bolivia so everything was shut, but we didn't mind wandering around in the sun and exploring the square. There is such a mixture of indigenous Bolivians and those who follow a more westernised living - most noticeably in the traditional Bolivian dress that many locals can be seen wearing. Women typically wear woollen tights, sandals, a pinafore and have their hair in two plaits with a hat worn on the head. Often the outfits are very colourful! Both Liv and I decided we needed to get some Bolivian clothing to fully embrace the culture here! Everything seems to very old school in comparison to England, with cars so banged up they would never be allowed on the road in a million years in the UK. The people seem so very happy and the streets are so pretty.
After a leisurely lunch and lots of walking around exploring the city, which was so mountainous the roads looked like waves, and it was beautiful being able to see rolling untouched mountains in every direction. I really liked Sucre. We returned to the hostel to bask in the sun for a couple of hours before heading up a (very steep) hill to a viewpoint overlooking the city. We got a jug of sangria at the hilltop restaurant called Mirador and ended up actually fairly drunk and talking for what felt like hours. A Bolivian windpipe band started playing early on which was lovely and really added to the mood. We went back down to the town and had dinner before heading back to the hostel; I'm so grateful that Liv is here too and I know this trip is going to be incredible.
