It was FREEZING when we got up and we were all scurrying around a bit frantically to get ready. After breakfast we set off in the jeep (in the dark of night) all huddled together with a million layers and blankets on for the start of a long day. We had been told to wear bikinis as we were to dip in a hot spring - I felt very very unsure about this!
On arrival at the hot spring Liv and I literally ran to the changing hut, shivering and whimpering and laughing - stripped down and bolted for the hot spring. It was AMAZING. The water was around 35 degrees, so basically a bath, and we watched the sunrise from in there. We were the first people in, and so as more people came to join it was very entertaining watching everyone else be just as frantic. One girl entered and I felt like I really really recognised her but it was so steamy in the hot spring I couldn't be sure. I edged closer and said "Rachel?!" and could not believe that it was actually her!!!! I had travelled with Rachel for a while in Vietnam and we always thought we would miss each other in South America. But what are the chances of reuniting in a hot spring in the middle of nowhere in Bolivia. It was so nice to see her.
After beginning to shrivel up like a prune I got out the hot spring and we left for our next stop on the tour, some underground sulphur gas stores in a volcanic region at an altitude of 4900 m. After that came my favourite so far as we arrived at the Colorado Lagoon, a huge red pool of water with flamingos and llamas going about their business. The backdrop was of mountains and the whole image was just so surreal. The moment that Liv and I got a selfie with a llama here was potentially one of the greatest moments of my life and we hilariously jumped around ecstatic to have done so. We spend a while at that lagoon taking in the scenery and enjoying watching the llamas - they're so funny.
We stopped at the Rock park that contains the tree shaped rock and wandered around there for a while, before continuing the drive through the mountains and passing the most active volcano in Bolivia. We also passed by a lot of incredible lagoons before stopping at one for a picnic lunch. This lagoon contained hundreds of flamingos all feeding, some flying and they were fascinating to watch. I have never seen so many scenic areas! I never knew Bolivia was this picturesque, with this much stunning landscape.
After lunch we continued on only to stop for a coca beer at a local shop, and drove through desert for hours until we reached out accommodation for the night which was a really sweet hotel right by the salt flats. It was much warmer in this one than the previous night and we were even able to have a hot shower. It was such a nice evening spent the four of us chatting away - plus we were served a pasta dish (which was pretty terrible) and it was hysterical to see two Italians try and tackle it. Never serve an Italian anything but a fantastic pasta dish.
