The aboriginal people call Fraser Island K'gari, which roughly translates into paradise and was also the name of the camp we stayed at on the second night. It is said that all the sand from the Eastern coast of Oz eventually ends up at Fraser. It is a huge sand island created by 800,000years of longshore drift. Although it is the worlds biggest sand island it is covered in rainforest and 40freshwater lakes. We did a 3day 2night 4WD self guided tour here.
There were already Katie, Elin, Anna and I and we were put with 6 others. We piled into our 4WD with only a rough intinery and a ferry crossing over there...the rest was down to us. We grouped together and did a joint food shop which totalled at $70,because of this we were named "Team Hungry" as"Team Goon" spent $300!!
The first day we drove(pretty slowly) to the rainforest and trekked for about an hour convinced that we were lost until we stumbled across this clear freshwater lake. It was amazing and we were the only ones there. After the trek back we didnt have enough time to visit the second lake as the first wasnt part of our intinery so we headed to camp. The tracks are pretty trecherous and all sand so we bumped along. The eastern beach is used as a highway and is only accessible during low tide, but it was a relief to drive on it as it was so smooth. Camping that night was amazing as the Milky Way was so clear and bright, i felt like i was in space. I have never seen anything like it before. On the second night of camping we stayed in a Aboriginal camp and the caretaker showed me his Didgeridoos and tried to teach me how to play them. Over the next 2days we visited 2 more lakes(Wabby and,the ultimate, Lake McKenzie) but there was alot of driving and detours taken purely because the hire company did not want us to cross some rocks of the beach. This resulted in a what could have been a 20minute drive turning into a 2 hour journey of the same track confined by trees with no one else about. When we'd spoke to the other groups they'd all cheated and gone along the beach! Lake Wabby was also a hilly trek, its surrounded by eucalypt forest and a massive sand dune, it was surreal and felt like we were trekking through the desert. We also visited a shipwreck and climbed to Indian Head, a viewpoint. Before we went to Fraser we were warned over again about the Wild Dingoes there, we only saw 3 the whole time and they didnt bother you if you didnt bother them. All in all one of the best experiences of my life and it is very hard to put into words!!
