We were up before 7am to finish packing and tidying, checked out and hit the road to Lihue at 8am. We didn't need to be so early as we had an 11:30am departure, but it beats being late!
We handed back 'Julia', our trusty orange Jeep then got the shuttle back to the airport terminal, through security and grabbed a coffee at Starbucks - not something I'd recommend, it was dreadful. We have yet to find anywhere that gets the concept of the perfect cappuccino! Only another week until I can enjoy an awesome strong skim cappuccino from the Moody Chef in St Leonards...
We settled in to wait for our flight, kids reading the 'Walking Dead' comics on iPads, me with a 'real' book on my iPad. Some interesting airport quirks - Lihue Airport do a half hourly time announcement - "Bing bong... The local time is... 10:30am" - every half hour! We were also amazed at how many people hog the seats by placing their bags on the seat beside them. I only saw one couple approach someone and ask them to move their bag (which they reluctantly did), the rest of the people just stood around giving the seat hoggers filthy looks.
A super quick flight to Honolulu, got our bags and a taxi to our home for the week - a 2br condo apartment at the Ilikai Hotel & Suites - not bad! We feel a little like we're in someone else's house (which we are) because the cupboards are full of the owner's gear. Its not a flash place of course, but fine by us. The hotel is apparently the one featured in the TV series "Hawaii Five-0", the front entrance is certainly well maintained and swishy looking.
We dragged the kids two blocks down Ala Moana Boulevard to the Ala Moana Center, one of the biggest outdoor shopping centers. Being the bargain shopper that I am I wasn't at all tempted by the full priced designer brand stores that seem to be all there is there, so no major shopping was done. In fact, I'm not a label fiend at the best of times, so unless I actually like something for what it is rather than the label, I'm not buying it! We'll save the shopping for the outlet stores instead.
We found the Foodland supermarket and stocked up on a few essentials, loaded up the bags and made use of our 'pack horses' Cody and Leo to help carry it back to our hotel. They complained of course, but sucked it up when we told them they wouldn't get to eat otherwise
A well earned dip in the pool to cool off, salad and rolls for dinner. We decided to rent a car for two days from Sunday morning and head out to Waikele Premium Outlets to get the shopping out of the way. There are several car rental places across the street, we decided go over there and see what they have in the morning rather than booking it online.

sue car rentals are nearly always cheaper in the US on line. You can book it without any commitment to go through with it, check out what they offer there and if on line is a better deal say, oh I have already booked it for less, here's the booking number :-) They told us if we book on line and don't follow through its no big deal, it just expires without anyone really even knowing it had happened unless it's activated by you.
