Arrived in Geneva on Thursday, train ride wicked, the lake just goes on forever! We think its about 70 miles long as it took us an hour to get from Lausanne (at one end) to Geneva (the other end) and trains must go around 70mph surely??
Hostel ok, quite basic and full of schools but we had a whole room to ourselves the 1st night which was a nice change.
Got on a tram when we 1st arrived to see if we could get a good look around town, but it took us to the Bronx (ish) and we didn't think much of it!! So we went back to the station and found a tourist info place. The lady in there was really helpful and gave us lots of maps and leaflets with places to visit. she also recommended 2 places to eat fondue (decided we have to have one before leaving!!). Went into a supermarket for a couple of bits and they didn't accept VISA and we were 10p short in cash - soooo embarrassing! So we left a yoghurt behind, paid and left with pink faces. Didn't do too much Thurs eve, just looked at the lake and had an early night.
Friday we got a boat across the lake with free travel cards from the hostel and walked down to the old town. Had a look around some of the shops (found the nice part of town!) and then wandered into the old town to find the cathedral. Very pretty inside but underneath was far better. There is an archeological site beneath it that is 3000sqm. Quite hard to understand some of it but it was amazing all the same, there was even a 2000 yr old skeleton there! Wandered round for a little while longer, then went to the restaurant we had suggested to us to have our fondue. It was delicious and the place was so popular - we got last table for 2 and that was 7pm! Very filling and reasonable too.
This morning we were booked onto a train to Milan at 11am and it took us until 4.30 to get there! Annoyingly we just missed a train to Kirsty so had to wait outside for 2 hrs. Too tired to walk round so just sat in the station square. Once on the train we got caught out for not having a reservation so had to pay 13€ each, v annoying. That train took bloody ages and we eventually got to Chaivari at 9pm!
