Was quite a long train ride to Napoli, but again through some lovely countryside. As we approached the city though we could sense it wasn´t going to be our favourite place - there was rubbish piled high everywhere )they are having a big issue with rubbish strikes). Once we arrived we travelled out to the hostel, again not very central. But this one was near a small port so it was very pretty for a change! Had our own room too which makes a nice change. We headed back into town and decided to get pizza from a place our guidebook recommends - it was amazing! They served only Marinara and Margherita and we had to wait nearly an hour to get a table, but it was well worth it and full of locals. We stood outside in what we thought was a disorganised queue but finally figured that you needed to get a ticket from inside and then they call your number when there is a table - good system. We then decided to make the most of being in town and started to look around at some of the sights we should be seeing. We both admitted though, there really wasn´t much to see and Napoli is the only place we haven´t felt particularly safe. Its very busy, very dirty and also has a high Maffia population and also lots of gypsies. So we headed back to the hostel and walked around the port instead, which was much nicer. We can also see Vesuvius from where we´re staying too!
Day 2 we headed for Pompeii. That was about a half hr train ride towards Sorento, very busy with locals, and we had to change as we got the wrong train! Also, something we´ve seen a few times now is that the gypsies walk through playing an instrument and use the little children to collect money with sad little faces - very hard to ignore but you just have to. When we arrived Dan spotted a bus ticket up Vesuvius, so we booked that straight away! Sadly though, being so naiive, we didn´t think Pompeii would be as big! So we only saw a small amount of it before having to dash for the bus to Vesuvius. Its amazing though, I really didn´t realise how much of it still remained and was actually standing - its like a whole city that just started to crumble a few years ago. Once we got the bus up Vesuvius, we realised we could have spent much longer in Pompeii, as the bus timetables were telling fibs! Vesuvius was wicked, well worth the visit. It took half an hour to get the bus up to 1000m, then we had to walk to the crater - very steep! We were handed walking sticks by this old man, I politely declined but Dan insisted on having them, meaning we then had to tip him!! And they were no help at all. The views from the top were brilliant, we were above cloud level! We could see all of Napoli, Sorrento and Capri too. She was smoking in places too, quite scary! You could also see the lave flow from when she last erupted in 1944. The bus down left 5mins early so we missed it and had to sit for 1.5 hrs for the next to leave! Got talking to some Kiwi tourists though, who live in London. The bus ride down was very hairy, the driver was crazy! He literally threw the bus round the corners (this is a mountain we´re talking about) and we all felt very sick on the way home! At thr train station the couple we we´re talking to invited us out for dinner so we arranged to meet them at the pizza place we visited. We we´re a little bit dubious at first but went along anyway (trekking half an hour across town and buying extra train tickets) and waited for them for about half hr - as they didn´t really know where we we´re talking about. And of course they didn´t bloody turn up!! Then the train back was really delayed and we were both very cross and vowed not to take up dinner offers again!! So we ended up in Burger King, yummy. When we got back to the hostel, an older guy was checking in who just looked a picture of health - he was rather large, smoking a fag and he STUNK of pee, I was nearly sick. Thank God he wasn´t on our floor, gross.
