The train journey to Rome was beautifeul, you could really identify the Tuscany countryside. Took a while to get here too, nearly 4 hours! We thankfully got an early traing from Florence as the hostel in Rome was very tricky to find and again about 6km from the centre. Massive though, and we were in separate dorms! Once we arrived we found a fab English speaking Tourist Office and got given tonnes of info on the city and recommendations on where to visit in 2 days.
We decided on the first day to go to the Vatican city as we were staying pretty nearby. It was really impressive, and St. Peters Basilica was free to walk round which was a nice touch. Its huge, and very ornate. Thankfully we got there early so there were no queues, but we went to look at the Sistene chapel queue and that was a different story, so we decided to come back early the next day. We made our way into the centre of town and walked down the main shopping street, seeing the Spanish steps on the way. Its massive, and took us ages. At the bottom we were really close to the colosseum and Roman forum so headed in that direction... The colosseum is truly amazing, probably my favourite place so far, the history associated with it and the sheer size of it and the forum around it are really hard to comprehend - the Romans were really really clever people!! Also, found out that the ruins are ruins because the eras since the Romans have taken part of the buildings, inc the colosseum, and used it to develop the new Rome. St Peters fascia is actually made using stone from the colosseum! Went inside the colosseum and took hundreds of pics.
Day 2 we spent a really long time at the Roman Forum, it was just breathtaking, and the weather was gorgeous too! We made the effort to get to the Sistene chapel early and there was a bloody massive queue again but we went for it and shuffled through the whole thing like sheep. It cost 14€ and yes it is definitely impressive but I personally thought it was quite a steep price for the amount of time you were there. And sadly no view of the Pope! Spent the night in the bar sharing a bottle of vino rosso and thinking of company names!
