Pompei was an ancient town which was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius (the volcano) in 79AD. It's very well preserved and they are still uncovering it to this day. It is open to the public so we went for the day. It was about ten minutes from our hotel so it wasn't far. Tripadvisor warned that it gets very hot and there is no shade.
